How do I teach basics?
Posted: Sun May 15, 2016 4:27 pm
I am a graduating senior and my line is currently very weak. I have one and a half strong players left and that's not going to cut it. I want to be able to help them as much as I can. The problem is that most of them are at a very beginning level. I have tried to teach them things like how to hold the sticks and about rebound and diddles but they don't seem get it. I certainly can't tell if they're getting it. How do I teach things like rebound? How do I explain diddles? Even how to hold the stick. I'm at a loss and the end of my means.

LOL... not going to cut it? How so? Will the universe come apart at the seams?
LOL guffah... if they stink so badly, where have you been for the past 4 years? You are describing others that have supposedly been in this game for 3 years, why are they so bad (in your opinion?)
You are little late the game my friend. Does your line have a tech? Does you line hold auditions/tryouts of any kind? If you have auditions, then you can coach individuals through that process. You can also offer lessons, especially to the younger students, or even middle schoolers.
But at the end of the day, you probably need to face the fact that you walk across the stage in less than one month. If you're not happy with how its going, I think you need to consider adjusting your expectations and move on with life. If the next gen fails (for whatever that means) then its on them.

Without a metronome its not drumming, its just hacking.

I love that he's trying to teach them how to hold sticks and diddles!
Step 1) How to hold the stick
Step 2) Basic stroke types...down, up.
Step 3) rinse and repeat.
