Fivelet notation

I have a bit of a weird question regarding rhythmic notation. I wrote a cadence earlier this year that featured a few improvised snare solos, and I ended up writing one of the solos for myself. In the third measure of this solo, I play 5 notes within the duration of a dotted eighth note, and I play this fivelet pattern four times, effectively playing 20 notes in three beats. I am trying to transcribe this solo right now, but have no idea how to notate that section. I could just put a 20:3 above the notes, but I would still like them to be grouped into fives. Do you have any advice?

I would write the rhythm as sixteenth notes, in groups of 5, with the ratio 5:6 written over each set of 5 notes.

Same... but I think it should be 5:3?

A lot of people write it that way, but its incorrect. If you are notating in 16th notes, then the second number in the ratio describes how many of THAT denomination would be taken up by the first number. So if he's using the dotted quarter note as his macro beat, then 6 16th notes fit into that space. You could use 8th notes as your denomination, and then the right ratio would be 5:3. Just depends on how you choose to write it.

At the end of the day, most people will figure it out either way.

The interpretation is "x" in the space of "y"... or "5" in the space of "3". If you present double beams, then that is "play 5 notes in the space of 3 sixteenth notes", which is equivalent to the dotted eighth note (the original interpretation... check the op). To say "play 5 notes in the space of 6 sixteenth notes" implies a dotted quarter note, not a dotted eighth, and this whole phrase would release on best 3 of the second measure.

Oh whoops. You're right. I misread the original post. Thought it said dotted quarter note.
