I could really go on for hours with phrases/sayings that have struck chords with my kids. In essence, though, you need to always be ahead of your students in the mental game. If you use a certain phrase too much, it becomes cliched to them, and the phrase/saying loses it effectiveness. As instructors it is crucial to stay persistent with bringing new/fresh approaches to our students to keep them engaged.

Thoughts?
I agree 100%. I asked because I was looking for such fresh new "sayings". I like a lot of your comments, because they are all very insightful. In my opinion, the best tech sayings are 50% instruction, and 50% attention grabbers.

if they ask its "because drummers give a minimum of 120% at all times, because those pansies in the pads and helmets only give One Ten(referring to 110%)"

I've used a variation on this...

Me: "If you want easy, go play soccer!"
Student: "Soccer isn't easy"
Me: "Really? What could be easier than an activity where success is defined by being just marginally better than some other snot-nosed brat who is doing the absolute minimum to NOT get yelled at by their coach?"
Student: "Whimper" (sulks away to work on open rolls...)
Without a metronome its not drumming, its just hacking.

couple that were said to us over the season-
"figure your lives out"
" i hate you all "
" thor here ( yes, we have a drumline mascot, a bulldog named thor ) has something to tell you. *leans down next to thor * he says you suck. "
" the spaces and rests are more important than the notes. "
" if you don't play the squib, you're cut"
" okay guys, good rep. some positives were the rushing, wrong notes, and bad heights. and zero accents. see you at finals! "
" the people at this competition do not care about any other high school. they came here to see you perform. they do not care about providence ( opposing high school) . they came to watch butler beats! now go put your drums on and lets NOT sound like we did at bandcamp. "

Tim Greene (at Blue Stars this past weekend) had one where he didn't need to say anything.

"You guys are dragging. This time, rush it."
*play 8's in time*
*Tim makes a face, then flicks off the entire drumline*

After that rep:
"You know you're never allowed to be slow again now."

Tim also had another funny one.
"You don't need to change the accent to make it sound louder, because it's already taller than the taps. Imagine me in China. I would stand out. Partly because I'm black, but also because they're all down here and I'm way taller than all of them. So, just think about it. I'm the accents, and the chinese people...well, just keep them down and don't let them come up" hahahaha.

Aungst had a funny one, but I forgot it. If I remember it, I'll come back.
