Not planning on it. I don't really understand the point. All legal transcriptions should be available to everyone.

That's why I specified legal transcriptions. The list of approved arrangers is in a seperate global announcement now at the top of each forum.

Hey guys, this thread actually prompted a subject for me to use in my English class. We had to pick a topic(or issue/problem), pick a side, and persuade people to agree with you. I ended up picking this topic of course and ended up making my movie project about it. But since this is such a debatable topic, I had to pick quite a strict line to follow in the topic, so please don't flame me and think that I 100% go by what I had to say in my project, I needed some material for my class and I mean it got me a grade. here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4IOn9ctAuU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Lemme know what you guys think.

While I believe that some of your arguments were flawed, I am impressed by your overall project. I hope you get (got) a good grade!

Yea, I shouldve thought out the argument out better, I agree, but when we started making the project I was worried about auditions, I didnt do as well as I couldve ^_^;; but like I said, it was hard to stick with one strict interpretation of things, which is why it's not as strong as it could be.
But thanks AWA! I hope its good enough, this grade is huge :/

Question about ensemble licensing. If I, as an instructor, purchased a piece of music(let's use DB9000 for an example), and used to for my kids at a school, if I left the school, could I transfer the performance license to another school or would I need to make another purchase?
There's no way around reality, and there's no way to fix things that have already happened. It is what it is, we are what we are, and there is nothing more to life than that. Rule #9.

If YOU purchase it, you own the license to use it. if there's a 'seat' limitation to the license, (e.g. 5 players), it's usually referring to 5 players may use a copy at any given time. So, if you do a show one year and give those 5 kids a copy of the music, have them return or destroy it at the end of the season and you would be able to use it again a couple of years down the road if you moved on to teach at another school.

EDIT: Be sure to check this: http://www.tapspace.com/support/faq/ind ... artlang=en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's hard to determine what the actual terms would be -- it's hard to discern their explanation for your situation. They write it for someone who is teaching multiple ensembles at the same time whereas you'd be teaching ONE ensemble one year and perhaps another ensemble another year. May want to email them for confirmation.

Hey guys, Bill Bachman here. Someone hipped me to this site (very cool) and this thread convinced me to join so that I could chime in. Most people seem to have no idea how important this stuff is. I'm going to be quite direct here because I care. I don't just care about me or my ability to make a living, I care about you and the future of our art form.

First of all here's how our capitalistic world works: Where you put your money things grow, where you don't things die. It's simple business. (If we were communists we wouldn't be "all about the money" and we'd share everything, thereby eliminating all competition. The problem there is that we're all inherently selfish and the products would suck because competition creates incentive for more excellent products and more competitive prices.)

I had a kid at a clinic the other day tell me excitedly that he copied Quad Logic for the quad player next to him. I had to pause to process what had just happened. Why didn't he just punch me in the face or kick me in the crotch? But I then realized that he was so far removed from how the world works that he actually thought he was doing me a favor.

Now I work hard, really hard to keep this little career going. If I had a day job I couldn't be doing what I do that many in the drumming community seem to really like. (And yes there are many days that I consider getting a day job since I now have a family to support.) Every time someone "shares" or "trades" (steals) one of my products it prevents me from moving forward. I actually have many book projects that have been on the back burner for a long time. They've been on the back burner for a long time since something that helps me put food on the table always goes on the front burner. Knowing that many have so little respect for the art, artist and/or product also deters me from putting in a massive amount of work to create the next product. Can I afford to dedicate a lot of time and money to create something that people will simply "share" (steal)? No. And honestly there are many products that I will probably never put out because of this.

Here's something else to chew on: Music is basically worthless. Wait, what? Yes, the perceived value of music these days is practically worthless. It's just something you download from your friends for free. Can you imagine paying $17 for an album? That's what we used to do. That music was valuable for sure, when we bought it we listened to it over and over again and really go a lot out of it (much more than when you randomly download 70 albums from somebody's itunes). If you wanted to borrow my album I might let you, but I'll need it back soon since it's my investment--if you want it you better go buy your own. Consequently the artist made money such that he/she/they could afford to make more music for me to enjoy.

I have a band that's about to record and get out there. I think I'll tell people this: "If you love us, buy the music and let your friends hear it so they can then buy it too if they like it. If you hate us, download it and "share" it with all your friends so that we can never afford to make any more music." Does that sound harsh? Am I crazy? No, that's business, that's how the world works. So, out of respect for the artist and in the interest of the future of our beloved art form, please support (support=paying $'s) those who work hard and make sacrifices to create these valuable products.

And fiinally, THANK YOU to all of you who have BOUGHT any of my books/music/DVD's/Heavy Hitter Pads/Remote Speedy Hat stands, you guys make it possible for me to do what I do.

If you buy the piece for one school to use and then go to teach at another school, the first school no longer has a license to use the piece. This is assuming that the instructor bought the piece. If the school bought it, then the first school continues to have the right to use that piece and the new school would have to purchase it.

Yes, but you can't leave any copies of the music with the prior group. You would be responsible for collecting all copies of the music.

If you teach two groups in the same year, you're only supposed to let one group per purchase use the music. So if you teach two groups, legally you'd need to buy two copies.
