This is an exercise I received from Chopstix Percussion many years ago. Our HS drumline summer camp was run by one of their people (I think his name might have actually been Mike Meyers, now that I think about it). Anyway, I transcribed it into LilyPond tonight as a test of that free notational software. It's a big pain, but it's free. The music is attached below. Note that it should have a Check Pattern out front.
This isn't the best exercise for grinding out the flam rudiments, but I think it is very fun to play. Let me know what you think and feel free to post a video, I won't be doing that.

The two things I don't like about the final product are the stickings and inconsistent size of 16th-note grouping.
I'm going to try a Cadence I wrote next, but that is kind of scary. Here is what Death by Flam looks like in text form (this is how you write music in this program).

I created some practice mp3s for this exercise. They can be downloaded from the link below. The tempos range from 74-140 bpm. I created these using free software, so they aren't as nice as those sold here at snarescience. But if you like them, you can thank me by buying something from snarescience.
Death by Flam mp3 <- edited link to tighter sounding snare
If you have any feedback about these files please let me know. I created them while giving quizzes, so I haven't listened to them carefully. Hopefully I got it right. I can easily fix any mistakes.
EDIT:
I've updated the link to new mp3 files that sound better. Note that there is now a check pattern after the count-off. Also, the count-off is 5 beats long due to my mp3 play always truncating the down beat. Think of it as a pickup beat (4e&a, 1, 2, 3, 4). I normally only hear (e&a, 1, 2, 3, 4).

I redid the mp3s with a tighter sounding snare. The link was updated above.

Sounds great! I think this is a good snare sound to practice with on most practice pads.knight427 wrote:I redid the mp3s with a tighter sounding snare. The link was updated above.
