Quad pads without laminates

What are some of the benefits of practicing on quad pads without laminates?
Thoughts? Opinions?

I like to take off the laminates from ******* pads. Because of the laminates, it caused me to think that I had to hit harder to get sound. I took off the laminates and my "touch" got better, I didn't have to hit as hard, but I was louder. Aka sound quality. They do make scrapes harder though.

I leave on the laminates if I use a VF quadropad. It feels better to me.
