What exactly should breaking down the technique do for us?

I believe the purpose of breaking down the technique is to gain understanding of how each part of your hand influences your stroke. For example, when I play I tend to let the fulcrum in my left hand slip and end up destroying the natural rebound of the stick. Exercises like this tend to help with understanding and avoiding that.
Just my thoughts, Petal may have a different reasoning. Great exercise btw!
