I think we've all heard this claim before. Frankly, it's becoming a circlejerk. /r/atheism probably has an abundance of these posts.
Anyway, most historians agree that a Jesus figure existed around 2000 years ago, and died around 30 AD. The only thing that presents trouble is the factuality of the Gospels. Yet again, some historians have used the Gospels as a reliable means of reconstructing Jesus's life.
If a group of delusional potheads really decided to completely fabricate everything, they did a darn good job at it. I'm pretty sure he existed at one point.

All history is muddy, because we do not know enough physics to travel back in time. We can travel forward in time (well not really, we can make ourselves travel more slowly through time, but it's not a very large difference. (it depends) But that's a whole different topic. I guess my point was some history is less muddy than other history. For example, we'll have an easier task tracking Jesus than we would learning about Siddhartha Guatama, just because Jesus is a lot younger. Also, we'll probably know more about Jesus than Muhammed, because Muhammed had special requests to not be exposed, (I think). 'All history is muddy' is a little over-generalizing, but your point I think you were making is solid.flamtaps5 wrote:All history is muddy. "What is history but a fable agreed upon?"
