Two questions -
First, I'm still confused as to where you can buy the cores... I also don't think I have a drill :/
Second, has anyone experimented with different types of wood for the shafts?

I use rubber stoppers from lowes for my soft or medium cores. I haven't made any hard yet. A drill is kind of a must.

Sorry to gravedig this thread, but I thought that I would share some mallets I made today. I took an old pair of mallets that were in poor shape and removed all of the felt. Then, I used some colored felt and sewed it on the mallet. These mallets are a colored felt/staccato mallet that sound really nice.

Here are three mallets ive made. Soon i will make matching ones for each to make pairs.
I am just using any kind of string I can find that os thin enough. I want to purchase some string online that will be perfect for mallet wrapping. Can anyone help me out and tell me where I can buy string online that is the same kind of string a lot of professionally wrapped mallets have?
Also I am using rubber stoppers from lowes cut in half down the center for lowes. Each stopper becomes two cores, one a bit larger than the other one.

I remember taking a mallet making class in college. Actually it wasn't a class per se. Our percussion instructor simply showed the percussion majors how to wrap the yarn. We usually just wrapped or rewrapped mallets we already owned, so we didn't really MAKE or manufacture them.
There's a certain amount of pride in knowing that you actually made your mallets, but I always ended up buying more because they didn't last.
Makes you appreciate Innovative and VF,etc..

While I mainly rewrap mallets that have unraveled, I talked to my director about making mallets from scratch, and he suggested this website: http://www.advantagenetworkinc.com/prod ... pplies.asp [/url]
to find cores and shafts for mallets.
I also have been designing mallets based on themes such as nature, and doing full art on the shafts and heads with yarn type and decor. I want to do more sets with themes like this, so I would appreciate new ideas or themes for more sets.
