What is on these vibe mallets?

Posted: Sun Mar 01, 2015 6:26 pm

I found this picture on Wikipedia. Apparently these were Joe Locke's mallets. What is the wrapping (or whatever that is) on the shafts of the mallets? Google has been little help. I've never heard of anyone wrapping/taping their mallet shafts. Thank you!

I made the post but forgot the picture. My apologies.
It has been added. Thanks for notifying me instead of just not replying.

Yeah, that is pretty strange. I've never heard of Joe Locke but it looks like he plays mainly vibraphone, so he probably plays Burton grip of some variation. That grip requires beefier mallets, so it's possible he is just trying to beef them up for his grip.

Ya know, you can't go back to Austantinople, now it's Istanbul, not Austantinople. Been a long time gone, Austantinople, now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night.

I'm that guy who says he'll try out for drum corps next year and never does.
But I'm totally gonna try to march Alliance this summer.

Some mallet players like Keiko Abe and another marimba one artist(can't remember their name ATM) have mallet tape. It could be this http://www.steveweissmusic.com/product/ ... allet-wrap but it's hard to tell. Not a lot of mallet players use tape but when they do I usually hear of them wrapping their hands not their mallets.

You can count on those mallets being hand wrapped by Joe Locke or whoever the performer is. You want a straight answer, you gotta ask the man.
Without a metronome its not drumming, its just hacking.

Some of our Vibe players put moleskin on their mallets to keep them from slipping, so it could be that. I'm not a big fan personally.
