It's just like playing snare. The technical skill will come from green scales and the like, while the chops will come from playing actual music, just because it's a hell of a lot more fun playing real music than exercises. The biggest thing is just playing, as much as possible.

I'm that guy who says he'll try out for drum corps next year and never does.
But I'm totally gonna try to march Alliance this summer.

Can you suggest any simple solos or licks? I guess just as a goal or a way to measure progress to keep myself motivated.

Well, it's a bit harder to find mallet stuff to play for free, sadly.Snare Playa wrote:Can you suggest any simple solos or licks? I guess just as a goal or a way to measure progress to keep myself motivated.

Anything? Everything I can find is way over my head. Surely there's something I could play in a month or so. But I suppose that's not essential because the ultimate goal is just to play the pit music. <sigh>

Buy books like Mark Ford's Technique through Music or Nancy Zeltzman'd Four Mallet Marimba Studies (not sure that's the actual title). A god two mallet book is Masterpieces for Marimba, though the author escapes me on that one.

The Mark Ford book is amazing, but I think most people here learned mallets by just playing band music for a basis, and going from there.

Also, any sort of clarinet, oboe, etc methods book is good to practice sightreading. imslp.org is a good site for free music.
