How do you play this on marimba?

I have this marimba part, but I'm not sure what this means or how to play it.

That doesn't seem to make sense. It's in 4/4, and there is 2 whole notes in each measure.

Maybe it's like a roll you play for the duration of that measure using those four notes.

I would think you'd roll and shift up to the second set of notes over the duration of the whole note... so 4 beats. That's how I'd play it anyways. If it's a solo, you can play it however you want and call it interpretation.

It must be that. Maybe whatever program that person was using messed up how the notes were printed. It makes sense; whole notes, one roll annotation.

A lot of times, in concert percussion, arrangers will put the different notes for each hand separately across the measure. This allows them to tell you the "sticking" without using numbers, and it also makes it a little bit easier to read. Considering this whole chord is thirds and seconds, if they were all stacked it would be a little difficult to read.

So overall you would play this as:
Left hand: D and A
Right hand: F and Bb

That's actually a pretty standard way of notating a tremolo in the tonal notation world. Its not a misprint or a work around. The composer wants to hear a four mallet roll between those four notes. The notes on the left would be in the left hand, and the notes on the right would be in the right. That being said, that's a little bit awkward to pull off. You'll have to cross the right hand F between the left hand notes. Its doable, but might take a little bit of work.

I agree it would be awkward, but I think it would be a little more comfortable than trying to play the A and Bb in the same hand.

Put your left hand on the left two notes and your right hand on the right two and roll between the two hands
That notation is often used on piano but not as much with marimba

It's a Tremolo. I learned this by using a site called Noteflight (you can arrange scores w many notations). A typical roll will have 2 slashes through the stem of the note, a tremolo has 3 slashes. The more slashes, the faster you roll. What the site has the tremolo sounds like, 2 slash=16th note roll and 3 slash=32nd note roll. Although I've never really been taught this, just roll faster than you would. I'd say this is a 4 mallet part? if so then try one hand rolls left side of tremolo and one hand rolls right side, OR one hand rolls lower notes and right hand rolls higher notes.
