What's your favorite marimba solos?

Posted: Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:23 pm

One of mine is the one I'm currently working on, Libertango by Sammut:

All-time favorite is Northern Lights by Ewazen:

Last in my top 3 is Dream of the Cherry Blossoms by Abe:

How bout you guys?

I haven't played any of these yet, but I love listening to them.

Polaris
Two Mexican Dances
Libertango
From My Little Island (especially mvt. 7)
Rotation IV
Rhythmic Caprice
October Night
Land
And definatly Marshmellow by David Friedman.

As far as pieces I've played and enjoy, Restless is my favorite, and I really enjoyed Musser's etude in B, and Gitano by Alice Gomez, even though it was insanely repetitive.

For small ensembles that feature marimba, i would have to say "...And Legions Will Rise". Absolutely gorgeous. Also, the new piece LIgNEouS 1 is freaking AMAZING, very innovative and musical. As far as solos go, some of the things that have been transcribed from Bach's works are beautiful. i would have to say if i had to pick one solo it would be Day Dreams. such a beautiful semi-modern work with loads of formalism and impressionism.
i have marched in HS and Div. 2 DCI.
my opinions and comments are mine and mine alone, and in no way reflect the beliefs, teachings, or opinions of any group i am associated with.

I'm a huge fan of Polaris and Stubernic by Mark Ford.

I'm that guy who says he'll try out for drum corps next year and never does.
But I'm totally gonna try to march Alliance this summer.

I'd say I like Rhythmic Caprice, I just need to find a good version of it. Same goes for Two Mexican Dances Mvt. 2.

Another one I like that no one mentioned was "Evergreen" by Benjamin Finley.
