Which Sticks?

Posted: Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:59 am

I have a pair of 5A vf's, 2B Beach Bay and 5B Beach Bay sticks. I don't prefer the beaches and I need new bigger sticks to practice with. I was thinking tom aungst's, ralph hardimon's, or a pair of scott johnsons.
Could I have some feedback? I play on a V3 pad/Heavy Hitter and am going to be using the sticks for both quad and snare stuff if it makes a difference.

If you couldn't tell already I'm kinda new ;P

I recommend the Innovative Percussion PR2's or Vic Firth Ralph Hardimon's.

VF Thom Hannums would switch well between snare and tenors.

If you want a well balanced stick with a fantastic sound, I would recommend Innovative Percussions Jim Casellas. If you want a heavier stick, then I would say go with IP's Gwaltneys.

I played for a short while with the IP Paul Rennick model this week at my local music store
and I liked the feel. Bottom line- go to a store and try the various models. Everyone has a
favorite stick, and if they're like me, that changes from time to time.

The standards seem to be Ralph Hardimon WOODEN TIPS for snare drums and MTS-1 for quads. However, if you're like me and play both and have very little money, I've found the Colin McNutt snare stick can switch between the two instruments very effectively. But ultimately, it's what Spiritsnare80 said. Go into a store and just drum with some different models and see what you like. If that's not an option though, the three sticks I suggested are pretty standard. All the sticks I mentioned are made by Vic Firth.

Personally, I think the Hardimons are too light for anyone above a beginning level. They're great for starting players, but eventually most people need something heavier. My personal favorites are the IP Paul Rennick 2s, but for something a little lighter and quicker go with either IP Jim Casellas or Promark DC8s, and for something a little beefier go with maybe IP Shane Gwaltneys or Ike Jacksons
